Vila Nova de Gaia sits across the Douro river from Porto’s Ribeira. It’s home to the famous port wine cellars and many hotels with views of the city. If you’re staying in Gaia, here’s how to get there from Porto Airport.
By metro
From the airport, take Line E (purple) to Trindade and change to Line D (yellow), which crosses the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge into Gaia. Jardim do Morro and General Torres are the closest stations to the riverside.
- Time: about 45 to 55 minutes, with one change.
- Ticket: an Andante ticket for the zones you travel through, plus the reusable card.
- Good to know: the stations are up on the hill and the walk down to the river is steep, not ideal with suitcases.
Taxi and Uber
A taxi or ride-hailing car takes you straight to your hotel in 20 to 30 minutes. Taxis are metered, with night and luggage supplements. Uber is usually cheaper, but prices rise with demand.
Private transfer
Your driver meets you in arrivals, tracks your flight and takes you to your hotel door in Gaia, even on the narrow, steep streets by the river. The price is fixed per vehicle and shown before you book.

Riverside or uptown: it makes a difference
Gaia has two sides: the riverside, with the cellars and many hotels with views, and the upper town, more residential and closer to the metro stations. If you’re staying by the river, a car to the door is worth it: the streets are narrow, steep and often cobbled, which makes wheeling suitcases hard. If you’re near a Line D station, the metro can be a reasonable option.
Getting back from Gaia to the airport
From Gaia’s riverside to the airport, allow 20 to 30 minutes by car, more at rush hour. By metro, you’ll climb up to the station and change at Trindade. For early-morning flights before the metro opens, a pre-booked transfer is the safest way to get there on time.
