The Douro Valley is one of Portugal’s most beautiful regions and almost a must for anyone visiting Porto: terraced vineyards, centuries-old wine estates (quintas) and the river always in view. But how do you get there? This guide compares driving, the train and a private transfer from Porto, or straight from Porto Airport, to Peso da Régua and Pinhão.
Régua or Pinhão: where should you go?
Peso da Régua is the gateway town to the Douro wine region, with a train station, river cruise pier and the Douro Museum. Pinhão, about 25 km further upriver, is a small village surrounded by some of the best-known quintas. Many visitors stay between the two, or at estates up on the hillsides.
Driving
The motorway (A4, then A24) is fast: about 1h15 to Régua. From there to Pinhão, the N222 follows the river and is often called one of the most beautiful roads in the world.
- Pros: total freedom with timing and stops.
- Cons: the driver can’t drink at tastings; winding roads; tolls; limited parking at some quintas.
By train
The Douro line leaves from São Bento station in central Porto and runs alongside the river for much of the way. It’s a scenic ride, especially after Marco de Canaveses.
- Time: about 2 to 2.5 hours to Régua and 2.5 to almost 3 hours to Pinhão.
- Frequency: several departures a day, but not all go as far as Pinhão. Check times on the CP website.
- Ticket: affordable, roughly €10–15 each way (indicative).
The train is a great experience if you travel light. Coming from the airport with luggage, though, you’ll first need to get to São Bento, and on arrival you’ll still need a ride to your quinta or hotel, which are rarely next to the station.
Private transfer from Porto or the airport
With a private transfer, your driver picks you up at the airport, your Porto hotel or any address and takes you straight to your accommodation in the Douro. No changes, no hauling bags between stations.
- Direct airport pickup, even for late flights.
- Vehicles with room for luggage, ideal for families and small groups.
- Fixed price per vehicle, shown before you book.
- Nobody in the group has to drive after the wine tastings.

Porto Airport straight to the Douro Valley: how it works
More and more travellers start their trip in the Douro and save Porto for the end. If your flight lands in the morning or around lunchtime, you can be at your quinta by mid-afternoon, in time for a sunset tasting.
- Book your transfer with your flight number and the exact address of your quinta or hotel.
- Your flight is tracked and your driver waits in arrivals.
- You take the motorway to Régua (about 1h20 from the airport) and, if needed, the N222 along the river to Pinhão.
- At the end of your stay, the same service takes you back to Porto or the airport.

Sample itinerary: a Douro day trip from Porto
- 9:00 – Leave Porto. First stop at a viewpoint before Régua.
- 10:30 – Tour and tasting at a quinta near Régua.
- 13:00 – Lunch with river views.
- 15:00 – One-hour boat trip in Pinhão.
- 16:30 – A second quinta, or the São Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint.
- 18:30 – Head back to Porto.
On a day like this, the big advantage of not driving is obvious: everyone can enjoy the tastings and the group gets back relaxed.
When to visit the Douro Valley
Spring brings green vines and pleasant temperatures. Summer is hot, especially down in the valley. September and October are harvest season with autumn colours, the most popular months. In winter it’s quieter and some quintas have shorter hours, but the scenery is still stunning.
Tips for your Douro trip
- Harvest season (September and early October) is very popular: book accommodation and transport early.
- Combine your trip with a river cruise from Régua or Pinhão.
- Arriving by plane? Head straight to the Douro and save Porto for the end of your trip.
