Angra dos Reis, with its hundreds of islands, and neighbouring Ilha Grande are the heart of the Costa Verde (Green Coast). Here is how to get from Rio de Janeiro to Angra dos Reis, how to go straight from Galeão airport, and how to continue to Ilha Grande.
Rio to Angra dos Reis private transfer
The transfer picks you up at your hotel or the airport and takes your group straight to your guesthouse or resort in Angra, or to the pier in time to catch the boat to Ilha Grande. It is the simplest way to make the trip with luggage.

By bus
Viação Costa Verde buses leave from the Novo Rio bus station and take about 3 hours to Angra dos Reis. Many stop at Conceição de Jacareí, where the speedboats to Ilha Grande leave from; check the stop when you buy your ticket.
By car
The route follows Avenida Brasil and the Rio-Santos Highway (BR-101), with no tolls. The road is beautiful, but it has single-lane stretches and bends, and traffic builds up at weekends. No cars are allowed on Ilha Grande: if you are going there, you leave the car in a car park on the mainland.
How to get to Ilha Grande
| Departure point | Boat | Approx. time to Abraão |
|---|---|---|
| Conceição de Jacareí | Speedboat | ~25 min |
| Angra dos Reis | Ferry or speedboat | 40 min to 1 h 20 min |
| Mangaratiba | Ferry | ~1 h 20 min |
Conceição de Jacareí comes before Angra, about 2 hours from Rio, and has the most speedboat departures. Times and prices change with the season; check before you travel.
Resorts in Angra and continuing to Paraty
Many Angra resorts are outside the town centre, along the Rio-Santos Highway; a door-to-door transfer saves you long taxi rides from the bus station. Paraty is about 100 km beyond Angra: see how to get from Rio de Janeiro to Paraty. Travelling with children? Read family transfers in Rio.
