Leaving Rio airport: the three car options

Uber from Rio airport (and 99)

Ride-hailing apps work normally. Pickup is on the departures level (2nd floor); you request the car once you have your bags. You need an internet connection (mobile data or the airport Wi-Fi). Both apps accept foreign cards.

  • Pros: usually the cheapest car option; price estimate in the app; cashless payment.
  • Cons: surge pricing when many flights land; waiting for the car; boot size is uncertain; no child seat.

Rio airport taxi

There is the regular taxi (metered) and the executive taxi (fixed fare, paid at a counter, more expensive). The official ranks are at the arrivals exit.

  • Pros: available straight away, no app needed.
  • Cons: with a regular taxi, you only know the final price at the end; band 2 applies at night, on Sundays and public holidays; queues at peak times.

Private transfer

The driver waits at arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight and takes your group straight to your destination.

  • Pros: fixed price known in advance; no waiting, no queues; vehicle chosen for the number of people and bags; child seat on request; 60 minutes of free waiting time after landing.
  • Cons: must be booked in advance; for one person with little luggage it usually costs more than the app.

Which to choose in each situation?

  • Alone or as a couple, light luggage, during the day: ride-hailing app, if surge pricing is normal.
  • You do not want to use an app or have no internet: a taxi from the official rank.
  • Family with children: a transfer, for the child seat and the space. See our guide to family transfers in Rio.
  • Group of 5 to 8: a transfer in a van, everyone together.
  • Late-night arrival or a destination outside Rio: a transfer, with the price agreed upfront. For example, GIG to Búzios.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get an Uber at Galeão airport?

On the departures level (2nd floor). Once your ride is confirmed, follow the app's instructions for the gate where you meet the driver.

Uber or taxi at Galeão: which is cheaper?

Most of the time Uber or 99 is cheaper than a regular taxi. When surge pricing is high, the difference shrinks or disappears.

Do Galeão taxis have fixed prices?

Regular taxis use the meter. Executive taxis have a fixed fare, paid at a counter, which is usually higher.

Do Ubers have child car seats?

Usually not. Taxis and ride-hailing cars do not normally carry child seats. With a private transfer, you can request one when booking.

When is a transfer the better choice?

For families with children, groups of 4 to 8, lots of luggage, late-night arrivals and trips out of the city, such as Búzios or Angra.
